Do you want to take your bujo font to the next level but don't know how? Here's a little secret... you don't have to be excellent at lettering.
While practicing your lettering will improve your handwriting, learning a new skill like Modern Calligraphy will allow you to achieve stunning spreads.
These skills require practice and consistency to master, and that's great!
But this post isn't about that. I'm talking about adding something extra to any heading. These are just simple steps anyone can do and have fun with it! So no matter what your skills are.. keep reading!!!
So here are my tips I've picked up along the way you can add some glam to any heading!
I've chosen a simple upper case and lower case example to make it as simple and easy, so make sure you give it a try!
Adding shadow to any font
I love to add shadow to just about every heading in my bullet journal. Start by choosing where your source of light comes from; I usually select the top left corner. Finally, the side of the letters that are not meeting the light is where you add the shadows.
*Tip- If you get confused about where to start the shadow and where to end it, draw a line in pencil from the light source point to the top and bottom of each letter, which will help you know where to start to finish.
Once you practice a couple of times, it will become second nature to you.
Bujo Font - Lowercase
Let's start by writing the word 'day' in a simple lowercase font using a thick marker.
More importantly, try to keep the write the letters evenly spaced for a cleaner outcome.

Add stitches to your bujo font
Stitches are just small dashes along the sides of each letter. They are a cute accent to add to give that hand-drawn effect, and best of all, ANYONE can do it!!
So with a thin marker, choose a color that will contrast your font color.
If you want white stitches, then the best way to achieve this is with the sakura white gel marker, which is a must-have, in my opinion.
Add Shadow
So it's time to add shadow. By adding shadows you can transform any boring font and jazz it up. I find Tombow markers the easiest for this and are one of my most used pens for lettering.
Extra details to your bujo font
Grab a fine black liner and draw lines at the end of your shadows to take it to the next level.
Draw an outer border around the whole word
Finally, you want to draw a border around the whole word with a bubble effect and you can color it in or draw the border. Play around with different font styles, and the sky's the limit!
Uppercase Bujo Font
In this example, firstly begin with writing the word outline with a thick marker, evenly spaced.
This time, we will outline the whole word with a black marker.
No surprise here; we are going to add shadow once again!
Now with a fine liner, draw along the whole shadow without leaving gaps.
Finally, add some thin lines diagonally along the shadow line.
Don't forget that you can always mix and match different fonts together, and this quote page is a perfect example. A few tips to consider when lettering a quote:
- Make the words that are important bigger
- Add decorations such as swirls, dots, and stars
- Use a few colors that go well together
- Choose a light marker for the shadow
That's a wrap, and now it's your turn! Explore different patterns, colors, shadows. It's all fun and play!
